Bones and Cartilage
From MyMCAT
Introduction
Both bones and cartilage make up the structural support system of the body. While both are very similar, they are each designed for slightly different functions.
Bones
This mineralized connective tissue is designed for both support of the body and protection of vital organs. It is elastic and lightweight, highly innervated (nerves inside), composed of calcium phosphate, and contains marrow in the center which produces different blood cells.
Cartilage
This softer, more flexible material is found in the ears, nose, and joints, avascular (without a blood supply), and makes up most of the fetal skeleton during development.
