While a periodic table is provided to you on the MCAT, one must also be able to explain the trends and configurations of the elements. The major groups one should be familiar with include: the Alkali, Alkaline Earth, and Transition Metals; the Halogens; the Noble Gases; the Non-Metals; and the Metalloids (semi-metals). In understanding why these groups behave the way they do, the MCAT expects you to also know the trends in ionization energy, electron affinity, electronegativity, and atomic radii.
