Introduction

Once the bolus of food has moved through the esophagus, it enters the stomach though the lower esophageal sphincter (a muscular ring that acts as a valve). The stomach stores, mixes, and partially digests food into a substance known as chyme. To assist in digestion, and to kill any unwanted bacteria trying to enter the body, the contents of the stomach are very acidic (with a pH of 2). While mechanical, enzymatic, and chemical digestion occurs in the stomach, no absorption of nutrients occurs in this organ of the digestive tract.
